When sciatica pain strikes, it can be hard to focus on much else. When you experience the searing pain of sciatica, it's important to reach out to a professional to get the help that you need to restore your back, hips, and legs to a pain-free state. At HealthPRO Physical Therapy, Patrick S Haydel, PCC and the rest of our care team are here to help you find relief from sciatica symptoms. Here, we'll explore the causes of sciatica and how physical therapy can help you get the pain relief that you need to feel your best.

What is Sciatica?

The sciatic nerve runs from the bottom of the spine through the buttocks and into the sides of each leg. Sometimes, this nerve becomes compressed or pinched due to spinal issues. This can result in sciatica, the name of a group of symptoms that can include pain in the lower back and buttocks (on one side or on both sides), pain down the side(s) of the leg(s), and a tingling or burning feeling in the affected areas. In severe cases, some people experience pain, tingling, and numbness from the lower back down to the toes.

Common Causes of Sciatica

Many people experience sciatica at some point in their lifetime. While the condition can be painful and interfere with daily activities, it can often be managed through physical therapy and lifestyle changes. Common causes of sciatica include back injuries, herniated discs, bulging discs, being overweight or obese, and pregnancy.
